Student Support Programmes
Mentoring Programme for Year 9 students
Year 9 students are mentored by Year 13 students who have been trained and selected specifically for this programme. They meet for 45minutes once in a 6 day cycle.
By placing focus on behaviour and attitudes the mentoring programme aims to:
- Help young people realise their potential.
- Help young people become self-sufficient, productive citizens
- Improve the social and communication skills of young people
Peer Support contributes to the positive school culture and environment by forging strong links and friendships between senior and junior students.
The Peer Support Programme, Te Aka Tautoko Akonga, is a personal development programme for secondary students, led by senior students.
The programme empowers senior students to give emotional and moral encouragement to their peers. All students involved benefit from the process – peer support develops leadership skills among those providing the support and it raises the self-esteem and confidence of young students at a time when they may be vulnerable. The result is a network of personal support for Northcote College students.
Peer Support contributes to the positive school culture and environment by forging strong links and friendships between senior and junior students. By providing the opportunity for more personal and friendly contact, it reduces anti-social attitudes and behaviours among young people.
The programme gives senior students real responsibility in caring for and leading others. It equips them with interpersonal and leadership skills which are a major benefit to themselves and society.
