Music in the Classroom

All music classes are designed with a proportional relationship between rigor and relevance.  Concepts are taught wherever possible through the practical application of skills. We have a broad view on music and embrace inclusivity including eastern concepts and traditional forms.  We strive to ensure each student can find a comfortable place in whatever style and culture they resonate with, looking also to find new ways to explore music at the cutting edge including technological advancements in production, emerging sales platforms, and new career pathways.

Students enrolled in music option classes are offered fully funded weekly lessons with our dedicated itinerant team.  Our teachers are some of New Zealand’s hardest working professional musicians who are committed to the success of our students and to our student-centred programme.

We offer lessons in: guitar, piano, voice, bass, drums, saxophone, oboe, clarinet, flute, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and music production.

For more information please contact Head of Faculty Performing Arts/Head of Music, Mr David Flyger, at flg@northcote.school.nz, or Associate Head of Music Mr Robert Dil at dil@northcote.school.nz

Music Performance

Our goal as a Department is to offer as many performance opportunities as possible as a means to build experience and to expose student talent to the community both nationally and internationally.  Our ensembles tour and travel locally, nationally, and internationally regularly to perform at renowned festivals and to explore musical hotspots.

We believe a huge amount of learning takes place through this practical application and all students enrolled in music classes are urged to take part in our co-curricular ensembles as these are directly aligned with our classroom curriculum.  Some students enrolled in our co-curricular programme are also offered fully funded instrumental lessons.

We offer students membership in a wide range of large and small ensembles including but not limited to: School musicals, Onewa Voices choir, Big Band, Concert Band, Rock Quest bands, String Ensemble, Chamber Music groups, and more!

We have a mentorship programme for rock bands that includes access to our recording studio and facilitation in performing in local competitions including Rock Quest and Stand Up Stand Out.
