Te Tiriti o Waitangi - Treaty of Waitangi Policy
Rationale:
The Treaty of Waitangi is a national treasure, the foundation of our nation and the basis upon which all peoples find their place in Aotearoa-New Zealand.

Every learner has a right to be supported to learn and to achieve.
Responsibilities:
The Board, through the Principal and staff, is required to; in consultation with the school's Maori community, develop and make known to the school's community; policies, plans and targets for improving the achievement of Maori students.
National Administrative Guideline 1 e)
The Principal, in consultation with students, staff, parents and wider whänau, is responsible for completing the review of this policy.
The Principal is responsible for ensuring that day to day school practices reflect this policy.
The senior manager with responsibility for Maori student achievement will report annually on Maori student achievement through the Principal to the Board of Trustees.
Guidelines:
- Northcote College will plan to maximize the achievement of Maori students. To achieve this, the school fully embraces the principles of 'Ka Hikitia - Managing Success' and recognizes the importance of Maori achieving education success.

The school is committed to offering Maori language at all levels.

- The school respects the importance of the role of Kaumätua/kuia.
- The Board will encourage and support interested members of the school’s Maori community to become Board members. There will be a dedicated seat on the Board for Maori representation.
- The school is committed to Te Whanau o Te Käkano.

The school acknowledges that “what works for Maori students works for all students.
- The school supports and encourages kapa haka, pöwhiri (welcome ceremony), hui nga watea (farewell ceremony) and the use of and correct pronunciation of Maori language especially Maori students’ names.

The school will provide a working environment for Maori staff that promotes understanding and supports Maori culture.

- The Board’s intent is to ensure that the aims of this policy are supported by the allocation of available resources.
- Northcote College is committed to 'Tataiako: Cultural Competencies for Teachers of Maori Learners' and recognises the philosophy that "Genuine, productive relationships among teachers and their Maori students, whänau, iwi and wider communities are vital foundations for effective teaching and learning".
- Each year the Board of Trustees will provide a 'Putea' in the annual budget to fund staff professional development to:
- Extend knowledge and use of 'te reo me ona tikanga'.
- Support professional learning to benefit Maori student achievement.
The 'Putea' amount will vary from year to year in response to the proposed professional learning.
As for all budget items, when considering the 'Putea', the Board will take cognisance of the school's strategic and annual goals, the financial situation and the benefit to the school.
