Counselling
Te Korowai Aroha
Northcote College Support Services are in Te Korowai Aroha (the cloak that surrounds you with care and respect). The student centre provides a quality, confidential service that equips and empowers students, staff and the wider school community.
Dignity and autonomy of every individual is paramount.
Services include advocacy, assistance with interpersonal relationships and personal issues, short term counselling, assessment, referral, individual needs and assisting students’ transition into our school, and into the community.
Counsellors
One full time and two part time Counsellors contribute to a safe and healthy learning environment by supporting students’ holistic wellbeing and addressing individual problems through counselling.
Confidentiality
Our Counsellors abide by the NZAC code of ethics. All counselling provided is private and confidential, unless any of the following is indicated:
- a student is going to hurt themself
- a student is going to hurt someone else
- another person is hurting or is going to hurt a student or someone else
- any of the above is happening to another person.
Youth Mentors
Our two Youth Mentors operate full time within the college. They help students to navigate their journey within school in order to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
Student Appointments
Students can make appointments by filling out the appropriate slip and putting it into the post box in Harakeke (the reception area).
Students can also Text or email counsellors for an appointment.
We try to see a student within 2 days of receiving an appointment request. If it is urgent or a student is in crisis, we make arrangements for the student to use a quiet private space while they wait to be seen.
Making contact and/or referrals
Please contact Katie Griff on 481 0141 ext 713 or grf@northcote.school.nz
Staff and parents can make referrals however, we do ask that you seek the student’s permission first.
Referrals to outside agencies occur when necessary. The Counsellors are responsible for referrals to an extensive network of agencies.
