Aik Ho appointed to Tall Ferns

Massive congratulations to Northcote College PE teacher and Premier Boys Basketball Head Coach Aik Ho – who has been appointed as an Assistant Coach to the Tall Ferns.

Aik recently joined the Tall Ferns squad (which included five new members) to a friendly tournament against the Japanese national women’s team, which is ranked 9th in the world and currently competing at the Paris Olympics.

In August he’ll travel with an extended squad of 18 players to a selection camp in San Francisco, then with the final 12-strong team to the FIBA Women’s World Cup Pre-Qualifier tournament in Mexico City – where they will play Mexico, Montenegro, and Mozambique in Group B.

Aik has more than 20 years of international experience – including Tall Ferns assistant coach from 2005-2021, where he helped guide NZ to a silver medal at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, and bronze on the Gold Coast in 2018; Tall Black 3x3 Assistant Coach at the 2023 Trans-Tasman series; and a lead coaching role with the Cook Island Basketball Federation.

Basketball New Zealand Women’s High Performance Programme Manager Lisa Wallbutton is excited at Aik’s return to the Tall Ferns.

‘Aik has a good knowledge of the current college athletes and current Tall Ferns. He is our expert in scouting, video analysis, and international basketball trends, and he will will bring innovative player development ideas – helping to elevate our team culture with his work ethic and positive demeanour.’

Aik also continues as a PE teacher and Premier Boys Basketball coach - and we are privileged to have him.
